FAQ
Do I need a visa to travel to Nigeria?
All visitors to Nigeria need a visa, except citizens of ECOWAS member states. Visas are not issued at the port of entry, so you must obtain yours before you travel. See the visa application steps on the consular services pages.
I am a citizen of Burkina Faso. Can I still travel to Nigeria without a visa?
Burkina Faso's withdrawal from ECOWAS took effect on 29 January 2025. On the same day, the ECOWAS Commission asked the authorities of member states to continue, until further notice, to recognise national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo held by citizens of Burkina Faso, and to allow them visa-free movement, residence and establishment in accordance with the ECOWAS protocols. Because these arrangements apply until further notice, contact the consular section on +226 25 36 09 80 to confirm the rule that applies on your travel date.
How do I apply for a Nigerian visa?
Visa applications are made online on the official portals of the Nigeria Immigration Service. For a short visit, apply for an e-Visa at evisa.immigration.gov.ng. For the other types of visa, apply at visa.immigration.gov.ng. Fill in the form, follow the instructions on the portal and keep your application reference.
What is the e-Visa?
The e-Visa is the online visa for short visits to Nigeria. Since 1 May 2025, it has replaced the visa on arrival. The Nigeria Immigration Service states that e-Visa applications are processed within 48 hours or less, and that approved e-Visas are sent with a QR code to the email address given in the application. Apply at evisa.immigration.gov.ng.
How can I follow my visa application?
Visa applications are followed on the services of the Nigeria Immigration Service: its application status service, with the reference given when you applied, and, for an e-Visa, its e-Visa status page. The Embassy keeps no online queue of applications. See the Application status page.
What is the electronic landing card?
All passengers travelling to Nigeria, except Nigerian citizens, must complete an electronic landing card online before boarding. It replaces the paper arrival and departure forms. Complete it at lecard.immigration.gov.ng.
My Nigerian visa has expired. What should I do?
If you are outside Nigeria, apply for a new visa on the portals of the Nigeria Immigration Service. If you are in Nigeria, the extension of a stay and the regularisation of an expired visa are handled by the Nigeria Immigration Service, which publishes guidance for holders of expired visas at immigration.gov.ng/expired-visa-holders.
I am a Nigerian living in Burkina Faso. Should I register with the Embassy?
Yes. Registration allows the consular section to keep in touch with you, to send you important information and to assist you more quickly in an emergency. To register, call the consular section on +226 25 36 09 80 (Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00) or write to info@nigeriaembassy-bf.org. See the consular registration page.
I have lost my Nigerian passport in Burkina Faso. What can I do?
Contact the consular section on +226 25 36 09 80. If your situation is urgent, call the emergency line on +226 72 00 00 11, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Nigeria Immigration Service is introducing the Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP), a single-entry travel document that lets Nigerians abroad whose passports have expired, been lost or been stolen return home. Read more on the Emergency Travel Certificate page.
How do I have a Nigerian document authenticated for use abroad?
Documents issued in Nigeria are authenticated by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, whose service validates business, educational and legal documents so that they are recognised abroad. It covers documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, child adoption documents, end-user certificates and digital signatures. The Ministry describes the service at foreignaffairs.gov.ng/services/document-authentication. Call the consular section on +226 25 36 09 80 to find out what applies to your document.
