Nigeria welcomes visitors from Burkina Faso and from around the world, whether they come for business, study, family or tourism. This section gives you an introduction to the country and the practical information you need to prepare your journey.
Nigeria at a glance
The Federal Republic of Nigeria became independent on 1 October 1960. It is a federation of 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, which is the capital of the federation. Lagos, on the Atlantic coast, is the country's largest city and its main commercial centre.
English is the language of government and administration. The Constitution provides that the business of the National Assembly is conducted in English, and in Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba when adequate arrangements have been made. Hundreds of other languages are spoken across the country, which reflects the great diversity of its peoples and traditions.
The national currency is the naira (₦), issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
